Ingredients

0/12 ready
  • 5 oz firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small red chili, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 green onion, sliced
  • Cooked rice for serving

The Story & Steps

Filipino sisig is traditionally a sizzling platter of chopped pork served on a hot plate, finished with a raw egg that cooks from the residual heat. This solo version captures that same dramatic presentation and textural contrast using tofu as the star.

Preparing the Tofu

After pressing your tofu to remove excess moisture, cut it into small cubes—about 1/2 inch. You want pieces that will get crispy on multiple sides. Toss with soy sauce and half the lime juice.

  1. Heat oil in a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over high heat
  2. Add tofu in a single layer and resist the urge to move it for 3-4 minutes
  3. Flip and cook another 2-3 minutes until deeply golden and crispy
  4. Add red onion, chili, and garlic to the pan, tossing for 1 minute until fragrant
  5. Remove from heat and stir in mayonnaise, black pepper, and remaining lime juice

The Crispy Egg

In the same pan (or a small separate one), fry your egg in a little oil over medium-high heat until the edges are deeply brown and crispy but the yolk remains runny. This is crucial—the yolk becomes the sauce.

Assembly

If you have a small cast-iron skillet, reheat the tofu mixture until sizzling, then top with the fried egg and green onions. Otherwise, pile everything onto a plate over rice. Break the yolk and mix it through, letting that richness coat every crispy piece. Solo dining has never looked or tasted this good.
