Ingredients

0/13 ready
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup diced pineapple
  • 1 cup diced mango
  • ½ cup sugar, divided
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Purple, blue, and yellow food coloring (gel)
  • Edible glitter (optional)

The Story & Steps

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka's lickable wallpaper lets visitors taste different fruits by licking different strips. While we can't replicate snozzberries (whatever those are), we can create beautiful, edible flatbreads painted with intensely flavored fruit reductions.

Instructions

  1. Make the flatbread dough by combining flour and salt. Add warm water and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  2. While dough rests, make your fruit "paints." In four separate small saucepans, cook each fruit with 2 tablespoons of sugar, stirring frequently until broken down and thick, about 10-15 minutes.
  3. Strain each fruit reduction through a fine-mesh sieve to remove seeds and pulp. Return to pans.
  4. Add a tiny bit of water to each reduction to make them more paintable. Intensify colors with food coloring: purple for raspberry, blue for blueberry, yellow for pineapple and mango.
  5. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin rectangular shape, about ⅛ inch thick.
  6. Heat a dry cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each flatbread for 1-2 minutes per side until lightly charred and cooked through.
  7. While still warm, use food-safe brushes to paint vertical stripes of different fruit reductions across each flatbread.
  8. Sprinkle with edible glitter if desired for that Wonka sparkle.
  9. Let the painted flatbreads dry slightly for 10 minutes before serving.

Serving idea: Hang these on a wall (using food-safe clips) for a true Wonka experience, or simply present them on a platter. Guests can tear off strips and taste each flavor. The flatbreads are best consumed within a few hours of painting.
