Preparation

In Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka's Fizzy Lifting Drinks caused Charlie and Grandpa Joe to float dangerously toward the factory's deadly fans. This earthbound version won't defeat gravity, but the explosive carbonation and popping candy create enough tingle to feel like you might just drift away.

Crafting the Base

1. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and heat until sugar dissolves completely. Let cool.
2. Mix the cooled simple syrup with orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, and citric acid.
3. Stir well and add a drop of orange food coloring if you want that Wonka-factory glow.
4. Refrigerate until very cold, at least 2 hours.

The Fizzy Lift

1. Fill tall glasses with ice and add a pinch of edible glitter to each.
2. Pour the citrus mixture halfway up each glass.
3. Add one packet of popping candy to each glass—it will immediately begin crackling.
4. Top quickly with sparkling water and watch the eruption of bubbles.
5. Serve with a warning about burping and instructions to drink it down fast while it's still popping and fizzing.
