Ingredients

0/9 ready
  • 1 large crusty bread roll (sourdough or ciabatta)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons shredded gruyere or cheddar
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Butter for brushing
  • Hot sauce for serving

The Story & Steps

Why dirty a plate when your bread can BE the plate? This ingenious single-serving breakfast was invented by someone who understood that the best meals are entirely self-contained.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the top off your bread roll and set aside. Hollow out the inside, leaving about ½-inch walls (save the bread chunks for snacking or croutons).
  3. Brush the inside and outside of the bread bowl with butter. Place on the baking sheet and toast for 5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, whisk together egg, cream, half the cheese, bacon, chives, salt, and pepper.
  5. Remove the bread bowl from the oven and carefully pour the egg mixture inside—it should fill it about ¾ of the way.
  6. Top with remaining cheese and return to the oven for 18-22 minutes, until the egg is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  7. Let cool for 3 minutes, replace the bread top like a hat, and dash with hot sauce.

The solo advantage: Eat this walking around your apartment, sitting on your couch, or standing at the window watching the world wake up. Zero cleanup, maximum satisfaction.
