Ingredients

0/8 ready
  • 1 bag pre-washed salad greens
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 cup pre-cooked chicken or chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup bottled dressing of your choice
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries or raisins

The Story & Steps

Kitchen shears are the most underutilized tool in the accessible cooking arsenal. They provide better control, require less force than knives, and work on almost everything. This salad proves you can create a fresh, varied meal without ever using a cutting board.

Shear Genius

Using clean kitchen shears (the heavy-duty kind, not delicate herb scissors), you'll snip everything directly into your serving bowl. The technique is simple: hold ingredients over the bowl and cut, letting pieces fall naturally.

Assembly

  1. Empty the bag of greens into a large bowl.
  2. Hold cherry tomatoes over the bowl and snip each one in half with shears. They'll fall right in.
  3. For the cucumber: no peeling needed. Hold it over the bowl and make cuts every 1/2 inch, rotating the cucumber slightly between cuts. The rounds will drop in.
  4. Cut the bell pepper in half with shears. Remove the stem end and shake out seeds. Hold each half over the bowl and snip into bite-sized strips.
  5. Snip chicken or add chickpeas whole.
  6. Sprinkle feta and cranberries on top.
  7. Drizzle with dressing. Use the shears to toss the salad by opening and closing them through the ingredients, lifting and mixing.

Beyond Salad

Once you start cooking with shears, you'll find endless uses: snipping bacon directly into a pan, cutting pizza, trimming pastry dough, cutting tortillas into strips for soup, and even snipping fresh herbs directly into dishes. Pro tip: Keep a dedicated pair just for food prep and run them through the dishwasher after each use.
